Gardening Progress...

This evening... the start of the July 4th, 3 day weekend for many, was my first weeding adventure in the garden. Since planting (see pics last month) - South West Michigan has been graced with rain storm w/lightening (plus requisite thunder) - plus high winds (even some tornadoes) just about every weekend, and many days during the week. I kind of felt like I was living in the North West...

Given this - I have not had to water since I planted. This is good, but it's also bad! Bad because watering gets me out there and I pull the weeds when they are small. When I don't have to water, the weeds grow - and tonight some of them were a foot tall. Still the veggies were out-pacing them, so not so bad.

So first water and I picked up my composted manure which I will spread and work it in with the sliding hoe. Then either this weekend (depending on weather... rain storm predicted for Monday) or next, I will lay on the mulch for the rest of the summer. The tomato plants are 2-3 ft tall now and I will begin tying them to the support wires. The garden will really start looking like it's in production, then.

Enjoy your holiday. Stay safe and don't blow any fingers off or start any fires.
